City's First Art in the Park
Excitement is building in Valley Grande in anticipation of our first Art in the Park event, to be held on October 30th, 2010 at the City Park and Walking Trail. The gates will open at 9:00am and the cost of admission will be a can of food, which will be donated to the Selma Area Food Bank to be used to help the needy of Dallas County.
We are fortunate to have many talented artists in the area and we invite all to come to Valley Grande to participate in Art in the Park. We welcome all fine artists and craftsmen, exhibiting work in various mixed media, including oil and acrylic painting, photography, sculpture and pottery. The City will furnish 9X9' tents at a cost of $40.00 to display artists' work for exhibit and sale. Set up and take down will be done by the City. Artists will be asked to complete their own set up by 8:00am, the day of the event. To reserve a tent, call City Hall at 334-872-0104 or download a reservation form on this website. On the main menu, select all documents then select forms and download the reservation form. Completed forms and payment may be mailed to City Hall.
Come out early and enjoy the beautiful autumn weather. There will be coffee and beignets available for sale at the park pavilion and the sounds of jazz will fill the air. Valley Grande's own Pat Labbe is cooking up a specialty or two in her lunch baskets for both adults and children.
We are happy to confirm that we will have caricaturist Leon Barwick at Art in the Park! Leon has been drawing caricatures since he was 14 years old and his creations are a fun way to capture a "portrait " including things special to the subject, such as his hobby, favorite place or pet. For only $8.00, Leon will create a black & white, single subject caricature to enjoy. Please don't miss a visit to Leon's tent at Art in the Park!
Bring the Children!
We are delighted to say that LaFawnda Watson, from the Selma Children's Museum, will be conducting a children's "make-and-take" workshop at 11:00am. Since Art in the Park is being held the day before Halloween, the children will be creating their own uniquely designed Halloween masks with LaFawda's direction. All materials will be provided, and there will be no charge for the workshop. This will be a fun way for our children to express their creativity!
Many have asked about the Art in the Park logo. We are happy to say that the logo will be printed on tee shirts, available for only $10.00 at the park.
We are also offering an adult acrylic painting workshop, conducted by Mary Katherine Moore, formerly of Valley Grande. This is a great and fun way for the novice to experience the joy of painting. The cost of the workshop is $35.00 including all supplies and instruction. Advance reservations are required to ensure a spot, an easel, a canvas, brushes and paint. The workshop will be held from 10:00am - 1:00pm at which time, the "artist" will take home his or her own masterpiece! If you are interested in tapping into your inner artist, please call Diane or Janet at City Hall (334-872-0104) to reserve your place.
